TIPS FOR CHRISTMAS

HOW CAN YOU SURVIVE CHRISTMAS?
(These tips can be also used for other stressful holidays such as Thanksgiving, Easter and so on.)

Christmas is supposed to be the season of peace, happiness and joy. For many people it can be exactly that. But for those who suffer from an Eating Distress, this happy season is a nightmare. It is a time of fear and dread as it draws nearer. If this is you, here are a few suggestions which could help.

  • Christmas falls on a Tuesday this year so when you wake up just imagine that it is like any other Tuesday in the year. For example, say to yourself, "It is Tuesday, it is another week and it will be a good week!"
  • Imagine you are a child again, when you used to really enjoy Christmas. When you wake up on Christmas morning, try to remember back to when you were maybe four years old. How did you feel? What were you looking forward to? What was the first thing on your mind when you woke up?
  • Treat yourself. Have a bubble bath... Ring a friend... Paint your nails/use a facemask... Watch an old movie on the television... Listen to some soothing music... And remind yourself that YOU ARE WORTH IT!!!
  • Let go of self-deprivation. You are just setting yourself up for a disaster. Keep saying to yourself, "I deserve to nurture my body. I deserve to enjoy myself just as much as anybody else."
  • Go for a walk with somebody. The fresh air will clear your head and talking to someone will stop the negativity from taking over.
  • Get into the Christmas spirit. Sing some Christmas carols and (if they will oblige!) get your family to join in with you!

Remember, the Marino Therapy Centre helpline will be running during Christmas - Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, from 6pm to 8pm. The number is: 01-8333063

Christmas day is only one day out of three hundred and sixty five in the year. You will survive so keep telling yourself that you will. Think positive.
The most important thing is to HAVE FUN!
